Ruyi Zhong Doctor in Bioscience Engineering at KU Leuven

Ruyi Zhoong Doctor in Bioscience Engineering at KU Leuven, 10-Jan-2017Leuven, 10-Jan-2017 - After the preliminary defence held on December 1, 2016, today Ruyi Zhong was promoted Doctor in Bioscience Engineering by the KU Leuven Examination Committee. The Committee was composed as follows:
Dr Pagliaro, Professor Pescarmona and Professor Peng smoothly took part through videoconferencing thanks to excellent digital communication equipment available in the Auditorium 'Jozef Heuts' (Landbouwinstituut) of KU Leuven.

Conforming to KU Leuven best practices for the final phase of the PhD, the doctoral candidate Rouy Zhong brightly answered questions related to each of the five chapters comprising her Thesis entitled “Sulfonated Mesoporous Silica-Carbon Nanocomposites for Biomass Conversion” describing significant achievements which include the first direct synthetic protocol to make silica-carbon nanocomposites from silica and carbon molecular precursors, subsequent sulfonation and with accessible strong SO3H acid sites and use for several acid-catalyzed biomass conversion reactions.

In four years Dr Zhong's work has been widely published in journals such as ChemCatChem, Green Chemistry, Chemistry of Materials and other prominent journals.
