Review for Dutch Research Council (NWO)

Logo of the NWO1-Aug-2019 - Mario Pagliaro has delivered today to the Dutch Research Council (NWO) the evaluation report of an important research project.

"Thank you very much for your review. The co-operation of international experts enables us to maintain the high standards for research", wrote the Programme Manager of the NWO to Italy's Research Council renowned scholar based in Sicily.

Criteria for the evaluation of the research project include reelvance to the thematic call, scientific quality of the proposed research, quality of the research groups, and potential utilization of the research findings.

Dr Pagliaro evaluates research projects for numerous leading research agencies, and had already reviewed a research project submitted to the NWO in late 2017.

Besides NWO, the list includes French Research Agency, Israel Science Foundation, Royal Society,  Pazi Foundation, US-Israel Binational Science Foundation, Research Foundation - Flanders, Estonian Research Council, Poland National Science Centre, and German Academic Exchange Service.

Founded in 1950, the Dutch Research Council NWO funds thousands of top researchers at universities and institutes and steers the course of Dutch science by means of subsidies and research programmes.

Currently, some 2,500 people work at NWO and about 1,400 of them are research personnel employed at the NWO Institutes.

Awarded on the basis of scientific merit grants are are selected on the basis of scientific excellence and vetted through a competitive peer-review process, involving thousands of scientists in the Netherlands and abroad every year, who carry out this essential mission on a voluntary basis.

Each year NWO invests more than 900 million EUR in about 6300 research projects at universities and knowledge institutions and in research infrastructure. These projects concern research driven by
scientific curiosity as well as research into societal issues. Based on the advice of independent researchers from the Netherlands and abroad NWO selects the best research proposals.
